What to Expect From Your First Interior Design Consultation

If you've never worked with an interior designer before, the idea of a consultation can feel a little intimidating. What do you need to prepare? What will they ask? What if you don't know your "style" yet?

Take a breath. That's exactly what the consultation is for.

At M Grace at Home, our first meeting isn't a test — it's a conversation. A chance for us to understand your space, your life, and what "home" really means to you. Here's what that looks like.

It Starts With Listening

The M Grace at Home studio — where the conversation begins

Before we talk about paint colors or furniture, we want to know you.

  • How do you use the space day to day?
  • What's working and what's not?
  • Do you entertain often, or is it mostly family time?
  • Are there rooms you avoid, or spots that just feel off?

There are no wrong answers. Some clients come in with Pinterest boards and magazine clippings. Others come with nothing but a feeling. Both are perfect starting points.

We Walk the Space Together

If we're meeting at your home, we'll walk through the rooms together. We'll notice things you might have stopped seeing — the way light enters in the afternoon, the awkward corner that could be functional, the proportions that might need rethinking.

If we're meeting at the studio, we'll have set aside time through a scheduled consultation — we'll often start with a virtual tour of your space or work from photos and floor plans you share.

Either way, this is where ideas start to take shape.

We Talk About Budget — Honestly

Exploring materials and finishes in the studio

Budget conversations don't have to be uncomfortable. We approach it as a design tool, not a limitation.

Knowing your range helps us:

  • Prioritize what will make the biggest impact
  • Recommend the right mix of investment pieces and practical choices
  • Avoid wasting time on options that don't fit

Whether you're refreshing one room or reimagining your entire home, we work within your reality — not a fantasy version of it.

You Leave With Clarity

By the end of the consultation, you'll have a clearer sense of:

  • What's possible within your space and budget
  • The scope of the project — from a single room to a phased whole-home plan
  • What the next steps look like if you decide to move forward
  • How the M Grace at Home process works from start to finish

There's no pressure. No hard sell. Just a genuine conversation about your home and how we might help you love it more.

What You Don't Need to Worry About

A welcoming space for honest design conversations

  • You don't need to know your style. That's our job to help you discover.
  • You don't need a perfect home. We've seen it all, and we love a good challenge.
  • You don't need to commit on the spot. Good design takes time, and so does trust.

The consultation is simply the first step in a relationship. It's how we figure out if we're the right fit for each other — and how we start building something beautiful together.
